UC San Diego’s Mathematics major gives students a rigorous foundation in calculus, linear algebra, mathematical reasoning, analysis, and algebra, then lets them tailor their studies through upper-division electives across pure and applied areas. The department emphasizes mathematics both as a powerful tool for science and engineering and as a discipline valued for its own beauty and creativity. Students can explore research, honors opportunities, faculty interests, and career advising while building strong problem-solving and abstract-thinking skills. With an inclusive, research-driven community, the major prepares graduates for industry, teaching, and advanced study in mathematics and related fields and quantitative careers.
